As with all drugs, also with Botox® there is a risk of side effects, although not everybody gets them, and they are usually mild.

Side effects generally occur within the first few days after the injection. Typically they last only for a short time but can sometimes persist for several months, and in rare cases even longer.

Side effects

adverse reactions to the injections against excessive sweating of the armpits.

Very common:

  • pain at the injection site.


  • pain at the injection site
  • headache
  • numbness
  • hot flashes
  • increased sweating in other places than the armpits
  • abnormal smell from your skin
  • itching
  • hair loss
  • bumps on the skin
  • Pain in extrermiteterna eg. hands and fingers
  • pain
  • reactions and swelling, bleeding or burning sensation and increased sensitivity at injection site.

Less common:

  • muscle weakness in the arm
  • feeling weak
  • muscle pain
  • joint problems

Adverse reactions to the injections in the head and neck for treatment of headaches in patients suffering from chronic migraines.


  • headache
  • migraine
  • skin rash
  • itching
  • pain at the injection site
  • Pain in the neck
  • muscle weakness in the face
  • drooping eyelids
  • muscle weakness
  • muscle pain
  • muscle cramp
  • musketlstelhet
  • muscle tension.

Less common:

  • difficulty swallowing
  • skin pain

For all types of injections, one can also get side effects caused by the injection itself. These are:

  • Bruising, bleeding, pain or infection
  • Numbness
  • Decreased sensitivity in the skin
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Rash/redness
  • Blood pressure or fainting because of pain or fear related to needles.
  • Following Botox ® injection, one can get a fever and flu-like symptoms.

After the injections the treatment effect generally sets in within 2-3 days and have its full effect after 5-6 weeks.

The blockage of nerve impulses diminishes progressively and depending on the treated area, dilution of the toxin and how responsive you are, it is individual how long the effect lasts.
